Former Toronto Maple Leaf captain C Mats Sundin announced his retirement from hockey today from his native, Sweden. "It was a tough decision," Sundin told reporters from a news conference at Stockholm's Grand Hotel on Wednesday. "It's sad to tell you today that my career as a pro hockey player is over". The 39-year-old Swede spent 13 seasons in Toronto making him the longest-serving European captain in NHL history. His 1,349 career points is most among Swedish players. The eight-time all-star singled out winning gold at the 2006 Turin Olympics and playoff runs with the Leafs as his career highlights. Sundin also mentioned that his decision to retire came this fall after spending a year with the Vancouver Canucks. Sundin didn't leave Toronto out of his retirement speech. "Toronto is and always will be my second home". He will always be remembered as a Leaf great.
