Roger Federer's promising US Open title run came to an end Monday night. Trailing by two points in the final set, Sixth seeded Argentine, Juan Martin del Potro, came back in the final set to win the Open by two points. Federer was robed of his 16th consecutive grand-slam title. The 20 year old, del Potro is an up and coming star, winning his first major title on Monday night. After the match Federer told reporters that he may have "some regrets" about his performance. Roger Federer is in his own league and shouldn't take the loss too personally. Expect him to come back stronger from this.
Tonight, Tom Brady was spectacular. After a year off from knee surgery, Brady showed he hasn't lost his touch. While the Buffalo Bills had a horrible pre-season, I knew this game was going to be a good one. My friend has me picking teams in a pool someone started at work. She told me about the pool after making her Week 1 pick, the New England Patriots. I had my doubts. I though that Buffalo had something to prove and would come out strong, which they did, until Tom Brady put his team on his shoulders and once again Buffalo coughed up a game on Monday Night Football. The Bills led 24-13 with 5:32 left in the 4th, when Brady took over. He threw two touchdown in that span to lead his Pats past the Bills in dramatic fashion. Looks like Brady is back and more motivated than ever. If you missed the game, highlights will be posted in the Featured Videos section.
I read a good article today on Derek Jeter's chances for AL MVP this year. I was completely blow away when learning Jeter has never won the award. Jeter has obviously been a big story lately, passing Lou Gehrig's Yankee hit record but to me that's besides the point. Being from Toronto, I've always detested the Yanks for obvious reasons but Derek Jeter has always been an athlete I admire. He is the definition of a captain. He's stayed healthy his entire career and his numbers have always been consistent. He stays away from negative press and had never been followed by controversy, in a sport that has become notorious for controversy. His teammates love him and he is one of the most respected players around the league. The closest he's come to an MVP award was in 2006, when he came second to B.C. native, Justin Morneau. It really isn't about numbers at this point. Jeter is just deserving. Period. His contribution to the game of baseball is incomparable. As a sports writer, it amazed me to learn that my colleagues, collectively, don't feel the same way as I do. Even if Jeter doesn't win it this year, his career has been and will continue to be MVP caliber in my books. I posted the MLB.com article below.
