Ken Rosenthal of
Fox Sports is
reporting that Toronto Blue Jays players are unhappy with manager Cito Gaston. The report claims that virtually the entire Jays clubhouse agrees that Cito has to go. A similar report from the
Canadian Press was also published today. Apparently, off the record, several Jays players and a source from upper management spoke out against the current manager to reporter,
Shi David. One unnamed player stated that the reason for the displeasure was due to "lack of communication, old-school approach and negativism".
Rosenthal also reported that when trying to reach out to GM J.P. Riccardi for his take, he was unavailable for comment, which is very rare. The rumours first came to surface when the New York Yankees came into town at the start of September. Former Jays Josh Towers, AJ Burnett and Eric Hinske learned from friends and former teammates about the revolt. This story is somewhat surprised because Jays' players have yet to speak out about their coach and the team has won nine out of the last ten games, uncharacteristic of a team bailing on their manager. It will be interesting to see what come from this. I reported earlier this week that Gaston was probably on his way out either at the end of this season or the next. It looks like there's a little more fire under his seat that I first speculated. There has been many problems for the Jays this season from this, to the canning of BJ Ryan and Scott Rolen, to the predictable underachievement of the team as a whole. There is definitely changes coming in Toronto at seasons end. Stayed tuned for more details on this story and check back next week for the Blue Jays Season in Review.
